Jim Jones has compared writing for Coolio’s new album to that on ‘My Soul’ - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying. Lead single “Intro” and “2 Minutes and 21 Seconds Of Funk” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. On the Slovakia charts, superstar Coolio’s career stalled before it left the starting gate. It is very deep stuff - very exciting
This track is a great song that still never gets old.
The opening track 2 Minutes and 21 Seconds Of Funk is very much like you would expect from other albums. I love the melodic melody of One Mo’ and to this day it makes me feel good. My Soul couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track The Devil Is Dope. Hit ‘Em is the albums biggest surprise. Knight Fall sets the tone for the entire album. Ooh La La - This one has a powerful beat and a good melody. Other tracks are good but your best bet is to stick with Can U Dig It. Nature Of The Business is simple, dignified and effective, Coolio refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Homeboy is the albums biggest surprise. Musically Throwdown 2000 is superior to other tracks in My Soul. Song Can I Get Down 1x is actually a funny song. Interlude have really caught my ear and imagination. My Soul is simply exquisite. Let’s Do It is beautiful, yet underrated track. The sound in C U When U Get There is really warm and Coolio’s signature voice is still very much present.
