Donald Byrd’s debut, ‘His Majesty King Funk: Up with Donald Byrd’, does not fit easily into one genre. It has been nine years Donald Byrd’ last studio CD, “His Majesty King Funk: Up with Donald Byrd” which won Array Academy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. It’s a brave and brilliant refocusing of Donald Byrd energies, virtually a rebirth. I love this album so much, i’ve been crazy about Donald Byrd ever.
In full palet of sound is used by Donald Byrd to accentuate the presentation.
It took me a little time but I ended up loving Boom, Boom - Donald Byrd. Album opener Bossa - Donald Byrd is a bright, upbeat ditty. Cantaloupe Island (Unedited Version Of Master Take) - Donald Byrd is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside. This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. One listen to the sheer beauty of House Of The Rising Sun (Reconstructed Version Of Master Take) - Donald Byrd was all I needed. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of Donald Byrd. It is succeeded by an outstanding track, however: See, See, Rider - Donald Byrd, which shows, blatantly, how much Donald Byrd has evolved as a singer. Donald Byrd must have run out of lyrics on the next track The Selma March - Grant Green. Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child - Donald Byrd - For me, this is the best of the album. That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day) - Grant Green - is a breath or fresh air compared to many previous songs of Donald Byrd. If you are a Donald Byrd fan, you will love The Cantaloupe Woman - Grant Green. Willow Weep For Me - Grant Green is a song to enjoy for years to come. The sound in You’ve Been Talkin’ ‘Bout Me Baby - Donald Byrd is really warm and Donald Byrd’s signature voice is still very much present.
