On Soulful Strut album, Grover Washington Jr. have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. While no new Grover Washington Jr. album is in sight, the artist has been road testing new songs during 1996 tour in Australia. This disc has all of the essential Grover Washington Jr. classics. I wish that “Soulful Strut” album was instrumental.
You have to get essence of the ’s power, to truly understand this masterpiece.
Bordertown is Grover Washington Jr.’s best work in years. Voice and instruments in Play That Groove For Me complement each other. This track is a great song that still never gets old. Soulful Strut without a doubt is the standout song of Soulful Strut. Village Groove is the albums biggest surprise. Headman’s Haunt is a song to enjoy for years to come. Poacher Man is one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace my stereo. As always, Grover Washington Jr.’s lyrics are worth listening to again and again. Uptown is a romantic if not formulaic ditty.
