Since completing 1997’s ‘But I Forgive You’, Mark Hummel fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This is the first studio album from Mark Hummel since bad diagnosis in 1997. Self-described as Blues with lots of words, Mark Hummel comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. This is one of the best cd’s i have heard through the whole thing.
stands out to me for its audacious melody and sheer beauty.
Music and lyrics of Drinkin’ Again creates, for me, fertile ground for daydreaming. This song is dynamic and dramatic. Opening track Living with the Blues shows the best of Mark Hummel. Vocal harmonies in this track are great and song structure is just right. Love Shock is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. My Kind of Baby is a song you cannot help but think about at odd moments in your day. Out on a Limb has to be one of the most beautiful tracks on the entire album. Only one song from Heart of Chicago named Peaches Tree really got me. It’s such an underrated song. Although I prefer the faster paced music, I think Rockin’ at the Riverside is my favorite song on Heart of Chicago. Rollin’ from Side to Side is nothing but pure genius. Step Back Baby - This one makes me want to not only sing along. I think Tryin’ to Make a Living is the best song Mark Hummel has ever done.
